<![CDATA[Lyman Ward's Junior ROTC Cadets Mentor Local Public School Students]]> Cadets enrolled in 1SG (Ret) Lee Kolb's LET II (U. S. Army Junior ROTC leadership) class will teach third graders at Dadeville Elementary School this semester through a program sponsored by Junior Achievement.

The cadets will teach the elementary students about American business and economics using the "Our City" curriculum, which includes the topics of Inside Cities; Building a City; Dining Out; and You Can Bank On It. The cadets will make the five-mile trek to the public school on Feb. 15, 22, and 29, and on March 7.

Cadets who do the teaching are Jeremy Burchett, Michael Collins, Jonathan Durban, Nathaniel Getman, Omar Grubbs, Jared Gustin, William Hubbard, Schuyler Jayne, William Kelley, Tyler Marks, Benjamin McCain, Andrew Rabion, and Larry Woods.

1SG Kolb, who teaches LET I and LET II in the Academy’s award-winning U. S. Army Junior ROTC program, initiated this program several years ago and sees it as a "win-win" proposition.

"The administration, faculty, and students at Dadeville Elementary School love to have our cadets on their campus, and we get consistently good feedback from them about the performance of our cadets," Kolb said. "At the same time our cadets have a tremendous experience preparing for and teaching younger students. Our cadets learn a great deal from the experience and have a lot of fun while they’re doing it."

COL Beitzel has visited Lyman Ward several times over the past few years. He spoke to MAJ Jeff Damron’s Psychology class about the advantages of obtaining a military college education. VMI is a four-year undergraduate college awarding B.A. and B.S. degrees, and is the nation's first state-supported military college. From the beginning, the VMI experience has instilled the character traits of service to community and to others in its cadets.

"What makes VMI distinctive in the world of higher education is its mission to prepare educated, honorable, and steadfast leaders in all walks of life," Beitzel said.

COL Beitzel praised the work being done at Lyman Ward and other military secondary schools, which share VMI's commitment to instill qualities of self-reliance, initiative, perseverance, integrity, and self-discipline in each cadet.

"Both VMI and Lyman Ward are making significant contributions to American society that are important and influential," he said.
