Senior Beta Club Honor Society Inducts Members

Lyman Ward’s historic Senior Beta Club scholastic honor society inducted four new members during Homecoming Weekend last October.  Membership in the Senior Beta Club is by invitation only.  Beta Club members must maintain a minimum 85 average in all academic subjects for two consecutive semesters at LWMA, and must maintain good standing in the Military Department as members representing 31 states and several foreign countries.

The four new Beta Club members are senior Fernando Garcia of Mexico City; senior Jose Penagos of Guatemala City; junior Kris Turner of Counce, TN; and sophomore David Wogan of Slidell, LA.  The inductees were led in the Beta Pledge by Chapter President Ben Gardner, a senior from Biddeford, ME, and  Vice President William Tino, a senior from Fayetteville, GA.

The National Beta Club encourages service as well as academic excellence.  The LWMA Senior Beta Club took an active part in two service projects this semester.  The group traveled the short distance to Dadeville, AL on Sept. 22 to assist with the Loaves and Fishes food distribution ministry at the local area food bank   Beta Club members unloaded food pallets, stocked shelves, and helped individuals to select and carry their grocery items.

The Senior Beta Club visited the residents of the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City on Veterans Day on Nov. 11.  Club members thanked the veterans for their service on behalf of the United States.  The Veterans Home staff thanked the Lyman Ward club members for visiting, and invited them to return in December for a Christmas program.

The Senior Betas raised more than $200 during a Thanksgiving holiday “Top Turkey” contest, and continue to need financial support to defray the cost of various club projects.  They will participate in the Christmas Toys for Tots program sponsored through the Tallapoosa County Department of Human Resources.  Donations are currently needed for that project as well as to pay for the club’s attendance at the annual state convention in Birmingham next Spring.  The Lyman Ward Club has for many years presented the colors to open the state convention.
