AP Program Continues to Grow

The Academy’s Advanced Placement (AP) program, beginning its sixth year, continues to offer advanced students an opportunity to earn both high school and college credits.  The on-line program is provided through Apex Learning, a company founded by Paul Allen, who is the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation.  Apex Learning is accredited through the Northwest Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Lyman Ward AP program was started in the Spring of 2000 with two students in an American Government class. The AP Program is under the direction of site coordinator and veteran social studies instructor Dee Orem.  A total of 17 computers are dedicated specifically for use by the AP students.  Alabama State Senator Ted Little (D-Auburn) has  been instrumental in helping securing state grants and funding for the computers.  Cadets who participate are selected for the program on the basis of recommendations by the faculty.

  • Because of our small size, these classes are offered on line, through Apex.com. There is an extra charge for the classes and the textbooks.
  • Apex.com is accredited by the regional agency of the Northwest United States, and Lyman Ward’s accrediting agency has approved our offering the courses.
  • Advance Placement Classes offer our best students an extra chance to prep for the college world they need to enter. Only our outstanding students are eligible for these classes.
  • Classes available are: American Government; Microeconomics; Biology; Psychology; and English Literature and Compostion.
