Campus

The Academy's campus consists of 320 acres. Included are two athletic fields, a parade field, two five-acre lakes, double tennis courts, four dormitories, a large dining hall, indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, modern strength training facility, indoor and outdoor rifle ranges, supply building, JROTC building, infirmary, administration building and a cadet canteen. Also on the campus of the Academy is the modern Martha Dixon Library and Technology Center. The historic Tallapoosa Hall serves as the main academic building.

Our newest additions, the Wesley P. Smith Auditorium building, was completed in 1999 and serves as a venue for the production of plays, musical performances, ceremonies and assemblies. The Hyram S. Cawley Infirmary, completed in 2001, provides updated facilities for campus health care. The facility was named for Sam "Doc" Cawley in honor of his 25 years of service to the Academy. The beautiful Alumni Center and Museum was completed in 2001. It is located at the main entrance of the Academy.

Adjacent to the campus are homes owned by the Academy which house members of the staff and their families.

Dorms (Barracks)

These dormitory room photos are from Wallace Hall which houses grades 9-12. Hill Hall which houses grades 6-8 is almost identical, but it also contains the campus canteen, movie room, game room, and barber shop. Cadets are normally housed two per room until they have earned a leadership position. Each floor comprises one company of approximately 40 cadets. Dorms rooms are inspected daily by the supervising Tactical Officer who lives in an apartment attached to the dorm.

Health Center

The Academy maintains its own Infirmary for cadets in case of minor illness and for those who do not require hospitalization. Our Medical Officer is on duty at the Infirmary both day and night. Ordinary illnesses that can be cared for at the school infirmary and do not require a physician's services or special medicines, are at no cost to parents. However, in cases that do require hospitalization, a physician's service or prescriptions for medicines or treatment, the cost is the responsibility of the parents.

We are very fortunate to have excellent medical facilities close at hand. Lakeshore Community Hospital is only five minutes from the campus. This hospital is modern and equipped to handle 60 bed patients. Very good dental facilities are also close by. East Alabama Medical Center, providing a complete complement of specialty medical services, is located only 18 miles from the campus.

Tallapoosa Hall

The historic Tallapoosa Hall serves as the main academic building. Tallapoosa Hall was added to the registry of Alabama's Historic Landmarks in 2008.

Martha Dixon Library

The Martha Dixon Library is conveniently located on the campus of Lyman Ward and supports the instructional component of the Academy's program. The library contains over 5,000 volumes of books including an extensive reference section for student research. Computers in the library also provide students with the opportunity to utilize the internet for research and access to parent-approved email accounts.

Russell Hall

Russell Hall houses the offices of the academy President, Admissions, and Commandant of Cadets.

Dining Facility

The recently renovated Academy dining facility serves meals to cadets seven days a week, and plays an integral role in supporting the mission of educating our growing students. Each weekday three meals are served to students, faculty, and staff. A brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday morning followed by an afternoon meal. This facility is the site of several major buffets during the school year where students and parents alike enjoy the staff's excellent cooking. The dining facility is also vital in supporting athletics and academic field trips. The campus Canteen located in Hill Hall is open on most weekends to provide the opportunity to purchase beverages and snacks between meals.
